What are the mechanisms of PD that really work? A primary school case study

How can we ensure that a Saturday at a conference like TDaPE is more than just a nice day out? With teachers and leaders already stretched for time, it's easy for great ideas to remain just that—ideas—without translating into lasting change in the classroom. In this session, Rachel Ball & Elliot Hahn will explore evidence-based principles for effective professional development and share a few insights into effective implementation in a primary school setting.

The vulnerable leader: harnessing authenticity to lead and be led

Adam Kohlbeck 42 min

This session digs into how vulnerability is often seen as negative, but in the context of school leadership, it is actually the greatest asset a leader has. We will explain how you can harness your authentic self and experiences to inspire others to be led by you, and we will give you practical strategies for both understanding yourself and leading others with just the right amount of vulnerability for the context.

Beyond the Right Answer: Teaching for Deep Mathematical Understanding

Stuart Welsh 51 min

Many pupils can get answers right without really understanding the maths. This workshop explores practical ways to uncover and develop pupil thinking through questioning, examples, boundary cases, and counterexamples. We will look at simple routines that strengthen reasoning, expose misconceptions, and support meaningful mathematical talk, helping lessons move beyond answer-getting to genuine understanding.

We shouldn't thank our robot overlords: the issues of personifying AI in the primary classroom.

Matt Hinkley 44 min

When AI acts too human, it tricks young kids into thinking it's actually alive. This human-like AI messes up basic digital smarts by hiding how the tech really works, making both children and adults too reliant on it (automation bias), and creating big safety problems, like replacing real-life connections. This session digs into the professional trouble and serious risks for any teacher who lets this illusion happen. We have to train educators to talk about AI accurately: it's a mechanical tool, not a human-like friend. You'll leave with practical, easy-to-use strategies to adopt ethical, non-human language that protects your teaching decisions and gives our pupils and ourselves a firmer understanding of algorithms.

How can lesson design support pupils with SEND?

Katie Marl 35 min

This practical workshop will explore how lesson design can reduce barriers for pupils with SEND. Using examples from Oak, teachers will examine practical strategies to improve clarity, reduce cognitive load and support participation, leaving with concrete ideas they can apply immediately to make learning more accessible for all pupils.

Multiplication²: Thinking Past Repeated Addition.

Jason Amoo-Gottfried XX min

In this session, I would like to share with you a system that helps primary-aged students interact with concepts within multiplication, such as multiples, factors, primes and ratios, like they might with sums and differences in addition. I'll introduce the system and activities to help them interact with it.

Reaching Reluctant Writers: Planning for Motivation

Donny Morrison & Jen Sutherland 40 min

This session explores how motivation theory can be used to inform primary schools' writing curricula and pedagogy, fostering lasting intrinsic motivation for writing. Drawing on key messages from the Writing Framework, it translates theory into practical strategies to develop motivation to write in the primary classroom.
